Heavy rains and a blast of frigid Arctic air caused havoc on roads and railways across the province, resulting in rock and mud slides that have affected critical transport infrastructure.

The Vancouver-based company said the situation was compounded by ongoing heavy rains that delayed repair work.

The company now expects to record metallurgical coal sales for the quarter of 5.1-5.4Mt.

Additionally, Teck said high mine-site clean coal inventory levels were also expected to limit first-quarter coal production should the adverse weather conditions persist.

Separately, the company reported the raw coal feed belt at the Elkview mine suffered a mechanical failure which was expected to hinder raw coal processing through the plant for about two weeks.

It is implementing plans to supplement Elkview production from its other operations during the outage.

Teck is ramping up its production and export capacity from British Columbia to Pacific markets, after recently executing a series of agreements with terminal operators.

Teck controls 940Mt of coking coal reserves that can support 27Mtpa production for many years.
