More than 23,000 people had attended PDAC in March in Toronto, with all then urged to monitor for symptoms after three attendees later tested positive for COVID-19.

A week after the event wrapped up, the World Health Organisation officially declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic.

"PDAC made the decision to go virtual after many months of analysis and careful consideration, and we are encouraged by the prospect of reaching an even greater number of international attendees who may not be able to attend our event in person," president Felix Lee said last week.

Executive director Lisa McDonald said the convention played a vital role in keeping the global mineral exploration and mining community connected, which was "more important than ever" as members, exhibitors, sponsors, attendees and partners overcame challenges presented by the global health crisis.

PDAC said the exact dates of the 2021 event, line-up and registration details would be confirmed in the coming weeks.

It was also in the process of adapting its networking events to a new, virtual format, and Lee said they were committed to providing a first-class experience to participants, wherever they were in the world.
