So much for Soma

May 13, 2015, marked the one-year anniversary of Turkey’s Soma coal mining disaster – the worst ever in Turkey’s history. An explosion at the mine, located in the western Manisa province, trapped and killed 301 miners. This was followed by the Ermenek mine accident in southern Turkey five-and-a-half months later, when 18 miners drowned following the flooding of a mine shaft. Despite government promises to improve health and safety standards, Turkey’s mining industry remains among the most hazardous in the world.
