CopperBank is set up to develop and spin off large-scale, low-grade projects when the copper price makes them economic.
Bonifacio's recent work has focused on the Pumpkin Hollow copper project in Nevada, which was conceived as a major openpit mine before the downturn but is now being established as an underground operation with staged openpit development also in prospect.
He retired from Nevada Copper in February after serving as CEO and president for 12 years.
CopperBank executive chairman Kovacevic said Bonifacio's development experience would be an asset for his company.
"His skill set and considerable experience in the advancement of copper projects will complement the rest of our team," he said.
Bonifacio said he was looking forward to working on CopperBank's projects and hoped to look for more "projects of merit" to add to the portfolio.
