He is co-CEO of Standard Life Aberdeen and joined the Glencore board in May 2017, which went against the UK governance guideline of not taking up non-executive positions on the board of more than one FTSE 100 company.
Gilbert had agreed with Standard Life Aberdeen to quit one of the two boards and confirmed in May he would be leaving Sky, which he joined in 2011, once its takeover was concluded.
He co-funded Aberdeen Asset Management in 1983 and has been chairman of the Prudential Regulation Authority's practitioner panel since December 2013.
He sits on the board of the Institute of International Finance and is also a member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore's international advisory panel and British American Business' international advisory board.
