K+S Windsor Salt's Mines Seleine operation in Quebec

Environment and Climate Change Canada assessed a fine of C$400,000 and Mines Seleine will be added to the national Environmental Offenders Registry after an investigation found the company placed dredged material outside the permitted area on four occasions between August 10-14, 2014.

Mines Seleine is owned by K+S Windsor Salt, headquartered in Pointe-Claire. It is Quebec's only salt mine, producing about 1.3 million tonnes each year using room-and-pillar underground mining to about 500m depth. The salt is mainly used for road de-icing.

The fines will be directed to the federal Environmental Damages Fund to be used for environmental and conservation projects.

K+S Group is the world's largest salt producer and K+S Windsor employs about 800 people across Canada.
