Atkins won an international design competition for the Songjiang InterContinental Hotel in August 2006.
 
The 5-star hotel is being built by the Shimao Group into the 90m deep quarry and the lowest two levels are set to be underwater.
 
The hotel was expected to have 383 bedrooms.
 
Local media reported today the hotel is expected to open later this year.
 
It is not the only hotel planned for a former mine site in China.
 
The Dalian Wanda Group is reportedly planning a tourism complex including a hotel cluster in an abandoned limestone mine in Dalian.
