The C208 Caravan aircraft was lost during a routine service flight from ATAC's Rackla project to Mayo, Yukon, the company said.

"First and foremost, our hearts go out to the family and friends of both Julia and Shawn for their tragic losses. Julia was a consummate professional in everything she did and a true inspiration to aspiring geologists," Downs said in a statement.

"Julia's infectious enthusiasm and passion will be deeply missed by ATAC and the entire exploration community."

Former ATAC president Rob Carne said: "We are absolutely devastated by this tragedy. Julia was truly a rising star in the industry and a close friend. Julia was beloved by everyone who had the opportunity to work with her and was deeply respected across the industry."

Lane started working as a senior project geologist with ATAC in 2009 and became a partner in Archer, Cathro & Associates, then ATAC's vice president of exploration in 2015. ATAC said she was instrumental in the company's discovery and delineation of the Osiris deposits, Canada's first and only Carlin-Type gold system.

Julia also gained international recognition through her frequent participation in geoscience events throughout North America.
