It's the fifth fatality reported by the company this year and the second at Kusasalethu, where an employee had died following a scraper winch-related incident in February.

Harmony said yesterday said one of its employees succumbed to his injuries after an engineering maintenance-related accident on Monday evening.

It said authorities had been informed and a full investigation was underway to understand the circumstances of the incident.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident and we all have a significant role to play in ensuring that we achieve zero harm in the workplace, and that safety is top of mind at all times," CEO Peter Steenkamp said.

"We are providing the necessary support to our deceased colleague's family and friends during this time."

Kusasalethu is Harmony's deepest mine and had a workforce of 4,941 people in 2019.

There were three fatalities at the operation in FY19 and another in December, following a rail-bound equipment related accident.

Harmony shares shed 9.65% yesterday in Johannesburg as the gold price plunged

They closed at ZAR10,373c, capitalising the company about ZAR62 billion (US$3.5 billion).
