Newmont has appointed Dr Emma FitzGerald and Mary Laschinger.

FitzGerald is the former CEO of Puma Energy and holds other board and advisory roles, including as an expert advisor to the World Economic Forum.

Laschinger is the former CEO of Veritiv and a current director of the Kellogg Company and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

Their appointments are effective December 1 and will take Newmont's number of directors to 13, of whom eight are male.

The miner had reduced its board from 15 directors to 11 in 2020 after completing the Goldcorp acquisition.

Dr Matthew Coon Come is the only former Goldcorp director remaining on Newmont's board.

Newmont said it had achieved gender parity for non-executive directors in September 2020, when Susan Story was elected to replace retiring J Kofi Bucknor, with the board then comprising five female and five male independent directors.

Veronica Hagen and Noreen Doyle then retired and were replaced by Patrick Awuah Jr, who founded the Ashesi University in Ghana, and Jose Manuel Madero who founded a consulting firm in Mexico.

Newmont chairman Gregory Boyce said the company was thrilled to welcome FitzGerald and Laschinger.

"Their outstanding senior management experience, comprehensive knowledge of complex global operations and deep understanding of governance and oversight make them excellent additions to our board," he said.
