Working ahead of closure

ICMM's Alice Davies believes thinking about closing a mine should start well before mining begins

Staff reporter

"Proactive planning for closure [should] be embedded and integrated across the entire value chain, from exploration through operation and closure," she said.

"As closure is multifaceted, there are lots of ingredients that need to be considered: from effective communication, accurate budget forecasting, collaboration between disciplines, and effective leadership."

Davies cited the example of AngloGold Ashanti's Quebradona copper-gold development in Colombia, where the gold major plans to start physically working on a post-mine-use "biodynamic park" during the construction phase for the operation.
